States in the USA without enough dental staff are known as Dental Care Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and there are currently just under 60 million people living in such places. It isn’t confined to poorer or more urban communities either, in relatively affluent places such as California there are much lower levels of dental staff who have to serve larger population areas. Unfortunately, it seems that government commitments to funding and providing dental health care aren’t as high as they could be. Whilst the number of children who have Medicaid has improved, there are still only about 18 million receiving dental treatment through such assistance programs.
